Leadership Coaching Case Studies

What Is Leadership Coaching?

Leadership coaching focuses on directing, mentoring, educating, and training individuals or a group of individuals to set and achieve specific goals. Companies that specialize in leadership coaching promote the benefits of their service that includes:

  • Increased levels of productivity, communication, and staff morale.
  • Increased loyalty and company commitment despite heavy work loads or volatile economic conditions.
  • Less executive turnover.
  • Improving one-on-one employer and employee relationships and social behavior.
  • More effective planning and risk management.
  • Building trust.
  • Input when clients change organizational structure.
  • Teaching new skill sets for new positions when required
  • Working with abrasive leaders who have trouble relating to other staff members.
  • Providing new leaders with skills to help with the responsibilities and planning necessary for their position;
  • Improving a leader’s psychological and social skills.
  • Helping individuals maintain a balance between work and personal life.
  • Training one executive who will then coach other staff members.

The following three sample case studies were provided by the Eluminas company as examples of leadership coaching.

Eluminas Sample Case Study 1: Construction Contractor Improves Effectiveness

The Situation

A large, global general contractor identified an objective: to increase efficiency and effectiveness in engineering, procurement, and construction of large-scale projects in order to remain number one in its highly competitive market. The company traditionally focused its performance efforts on process engineering, cost control, and efficiency programs¾with limited results. An analysis showed that middle and senior leaders didn’t know how to effectively drive these initiatives, or how to leverage them to reach measurable results.

The Solution

Leadership development programming and coaching was provided for the company’s CEO and his “direct reports,” as well as the top 250 leaders throughout the organization. The coaching focused on creating high-performance leadership behaviors to improve the company’s bottom-line business results. It also focused on incorporating the behaviors into daily habits … including setting clear expectations, pinpointing critical behaviors needed to improve project performance, underscoring what it means to “hold people accountable” for their commitments, and acquiring the skills to provide effective, positive, and constructive feedback.

The Results

Leadership coaching led to enhanced performance throughout the company’s projects¾including a significant reduction in revisions and schedule delays from engineering design changes, millions of dollars in savings from ideas generated by employees, and even more efficient travel planning.

Eluminas Sample Case Study 2: One-on-One Executive Coaching

The Situation

The client wanted to further develop his self-awareness and confidence at work following a personal development review.   He had decided to use coaching rather than conventional training although he was fairly skeptical about the impact.

The Solution

One of our coaches worked with him one-on-one for four months and focused on developing a heightened self-awareness, especially of his core values and beliefs.

The Results

The client related, “Having undergone a series of intriguing, inspiring, and sometimes emotional sessions with my coach, I have gained an invaluable insight into myself as an individual. This has boosted my self-confidence and has provided tools for use in both my professional and personal life. The bed-rock to this was gaining clarity of my personal values seemingly such a simple matter, but so profound. As a result, my priorities are clear and I am more accepting of who I am and what I stand for. Looking back on this experience, what is very clear to me is how much I have achieved with a relatively small time commitment. To me this is in sharp contrast with what a conventional training course might deliver.”

Eluminas Sample Case Study 3: From CEO to the Next Level

The Situation

The CEO wanted to take his leadership to the next level and thought he could be more effective if he changed some of his habits and beliefs. He was fairly cynical at first especially since a previous experience with coaching had been unsuccessful.

The Solution

One of our coaches worked with him one-on-one for six months. The focus of each session varied from “growing” communication skills to develop relationships, to improving life balance, to deepening self-belief and confidence in order to deal with challenging situations with less stress and greater impact.

The Results

The client reported, “Not once was I made to feel like a typical case, nor did my coach’s observations and suggestions ever feel “off the shelf.” I put this down to her extraordinary ability to ask penetrating questions to draw insight from my responses, and to connect patterns in my behavior across a range of situations. Over the next six months, I engineered the most exciting new business opportunity in my career and also played an important role in helping lead the agency to its strongest half-year performance in history. My family life has never been better. Just a coincidence? I don’t think so.”
