Coaching and Mentoring: Are They Overrated?

To some extent, the coaching and mentoring industry is viewed by many people in a slightly negative way … by people who don’t understand that one-on-one coaching can help you cope more effectively with life. That’s partly because the concept of professional coaching and its relevance to the modern world isn’t something that most people are made aware of.

The idea behind personal coaching evolved from established business management research. This research indicated that the identification of key skills sets, which are not facilitated by traditional education, has been instrumental in the revolution of modern business techniques.

As the world marches toward globalization, the pressures of business and personal environment shift, and more and more of our time is spent dealing with the basic “administration of life.” Studies of what motivates individuals have identified increasing pressure as their level of needs increase beginning with the basic physiological needs of food and shelter and security; moving through to self-actualization.

The twentieth century has seen both an explosion in population and in the number of people who have a higher level of basic needs. This means there are more people who are in direct competition for any resources to improve their lives beyond their basic needs. An increase in competition means that more people will strive harder and harder for recognition in the workplace.

Coaching Focuses on All Skills Sets

Coaching addresses the fact that many of the strategies in place in our existing culture don’t provide individuals with the most efficient tools for achieving their full potential. And many individuals are under the impression that the best way to achieve their goals is simply to do more and work harder. While hard work is important to success, there are many other skills that are just as important that many people do not possess.

The main skills that many of us lack are self-actualizing skills such as setting effective goals and aims, time management, and leadership which are all under-represented in standard conventional education. Mentoring and life coaching teach all of these skills and more. As a result, people who have undergone life coaching and mentoring find it much easier to effectively prioritize their actions and reduce the amount of effort they need to succeed.

Life Coaching Will Improve Your Way of Living

Life coaching has been demonstrated to enhance both the work and lifestyle benefits of individuals by teaching effective communication and time management which help to accentuate their existing skills sets. Many of us do these things already; however, coaching takes us to the next step … through a process of self- discovery, coaches help us enhance those things that we already do well.

Coaching, as a method of teaching, is becoming more and more in line with main stream curriculum-based learning in schools and colleges. In recent years many educational institutions have implemented a mentoring program to offset traditional educational styles. And in the workplace, the use of mentors to coach teams and individuals has become more commonplace. Is it any wonder that more and more people are realizing the benefits of life-skill education?
