Career Coach: Do I Really Need One?

People fall into broad categories … despite our infinite small differences. Some people are happy with their lot in life: Their ambitions are fulfilled (for the moment), and they are moving through life and work with ease and comfort. Others try to ignore the feeling that they are not reaching their full potential in life or in the workplace.
Once basic needs have been met, the second group of people the “others” often reach a point in life where they are working a good job and have all the things they need, but a small part of their conscience is nagging away at them.

If you’re an “other,” you should consider the career coaching experience. It is a process that not only gives you the skills to develop a more secure and better career, it also removes that nagging feeling for once and for all.

People who decide on pursuing some sort of career coaching often fall into two broad categories: One group knows what they want but don’t know how to get it; the other group doesn’t have a clear idea of what they want they just know they want something different.

I Know What I Want. How Do I … ?

If you belong to the first group, then career coaching will give you a set of skills to develop non-job specific skills that will move you into the job of your dreams. How often have people you’ve worked with been given promotions that you felt were less qualified than you are? Sometimes the reason can be as simple as the way in which they communicated and demonstrated leadership.
Career coaching can equip you with these skills and help you use your communication and leadership skills in situations you encounter in your everyday life. Good communication is a very intricate thing, and much of it in the workplace is nonverbal: It is a combination of actions, language, and bearing that makes individuals stand out in a crowd. Some people are naturally better at it than others, but these skills can be learned by anyone and career coaching is a great way to learn.

I Want Something Different. How Do I … ?

If you are in the second group, career coaching can give you the all-important skills to be able to recognize your potential and to set clear goals for advancement in the job of your dreams. Goal-setting is a real skill: It allows you to recognize what it is that you want to achieve, and allows you to set a clear time frame to reach your goals. Coaches use techniques that will enhance your natural abilities and raise your potential to even higher levels.

Whichever type of person you are … if you feel that you don’t get the recognition or promotions you deserve at work, or that you are simply in the wrong job, then career coaching is for you. It will give you a new lease of life, and allow you to follow your hopes and dreams. Taking advantage of professional career coaching is the way for people to quickly advance to the position they want in an organization, and it also teaches useful and highly transferable skills to those who decide “I want something different.”
